Mini Cooling Engine
Prof. Du Ruxu (Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering) has developed a miniature Vapor Compression Refrigeration (VCR) system. It is designed for cooling electronics products.
Electronics cooling is a critical problem which is gaining much attention in line with the advances in semiconductor technology. As the chip power increases continuously, traditional passive heat dissipation techniques are obsolete and new active cooling techniques become necessary. Among various new cooling approaches, the vapor compression refrigeration approach is the most effective.
The miniaturized components are integrated in a box with dimensions 300 x 230 x 70 mm. The temperature of a cold plate could be maintained at about 60 ÂșC when the electric power input were 200 W and the second-law efficiency ranged from 0.23 to 0.31.
