Increase the Light Emission Efficiency of Light-emitting Diodes by Plasmonic Crystals

Prof. Daniel Ong (Department of Physics) recently demonstrated that surface plasmons (SPs) can be used to effectively improve the performance of light-emitting materials. More than 10-fold of emission enhancements have been observed from inorganic and organic semiconductors simply by coating them with a thin metal layer. As a result, in analogy to photonic crystals, SP-based photonic crystals, or plasmonic crystals, provide an alternative way to increase the emission efficiency of LEDs.
