Engineering Graduate Training Scheme by VTC

Administered by the Sub-committee on EGTS of the Committee on Technologist Training, the Engineering Graduate Training Scheme (EGTS) aims to provide more training opportunities for engineering graduates by subsidising their employers who provide such training. This helps more graduates meet the training requirements of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and be awarded with the HKIE’s professional status.

Local engineering graduates and sandwich engineering students or overseas graduates with qualifications that meet the HKIE Corporate Membership requirements are eligible to join the EGTS. The trainings are closely monitored by engineering supervisors appointed by the HKIE who should be HKIE corporate members in the same discipline as their respective trainees and hold a responsible position in the organisation providing the training. In organisations where there are no suitable engineering supervisors, the Sub-committee on EGTS is able to provide assistance in finding external supervisors.

Throughout the training period, trainees are required to maintain training logbooks, which are obtainable from the HKIE, for examination by their engineering supervisors and the HKIE for membership purposes. The logbooks would also be inspected by officers of the VTC for verification of the training progress. Employers are required to submit copies of the HKIE logbook of individual trainees to the Sub-committee on a quarterly basis. Upon completion of each training programme, employers are required to submit a final training report and the HKIE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) log book to prove that individual trainees have met the CPD requirements. Trainees would then be awarded with the Certificate of Completion of EGTS Training issued by the employer and countersigned by the Chairman of the Committee on Technologist Training.

Subsidy:
A trainee being trained under an approved programme by the HKIE will receive a subsidy through his employer as part of his salary subject to regular review. The subsidy may cover a combination of the sandwich and post-graduate training programmes of up to 18 months.
