This talk will discuss the general steps involved in using patent protection to develop basic research findings into marketable products through the use of a private company start-ups, how biotechnology product development differs from other high tech (such as IT) product developments. This can lead into the different methods in obtaining financing to perform the requisite R&D to bring a biotech product to market, while explaining how a research scientist can learn to become an entrepreneur and what are the qualifications that he/she must have to make the transition process feasible. An account of how these steps were used to develop our novel anti-cancer products that have enormous clinical and financial possibilities will be given.
Dr. Cho-Yau Yeung holds a BSc degree in Physics, an MSc degree in Biochemistry, and a Ph.D. degree in Biochemical Genetics. He completed his post-doctoral training in Molecular Genetics at the Department of Biochemistry in the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, USA in 1985, and became a full-time faculty member of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine @ Chicago (UIC), IL, USA that year. He has been the scientific director of the MUNIN Corporation at Oak Park, IL, USA since 1993, and took early retirement from UIC to direct the MUNIN Corporation as president on a full time basis since 2004. He co-authored many peer-reviewed journal articles and is the co-inventor of issued US and worldwide patents covering 3 distinct molecular genetics technology platforms that have therapeutic development utilities.
